DNS explained
What each DNS record means
DNS (the Domain Name System) tells the internet where your website and email live. These are the records this tool checks.
NS: Nameservers
The servers in charge of your domain’s DNS. Whoever runs your nameservers controls every other record.
A and AAAA: Website IP
The IPv4 (A) and IPv6 (AAAA) address of the server that hosts your website.
CNAME: Alias
Points one name at another, for example www.yourdomain.co.za at yourdomain.co.za.
MX: Mail servers
Where email for your domain is delivered. The lowest priority number is tried first.
TXT: SPF and verification
Text records. SPF lists the servers allowed to send email for your domain; services also use TXT records to verify ownership.
DMARC
A TXT record at _dmarc that tells receiving servers what to do with email that fails SPF or DKIM checks.
SOA: Start of Authority
The zone’s primary nameserver, admin contact and serial number, which changes every time the zone is edited.
TTL: Time to live
How long, in seconds, other servers may cache a record. It’s why DNS changes can take time to show everywhere.
Questions
DNS lookup questions
Why don’t my DNS changes show yet?
DNS servers cache records for their TTL, so a change can take time to show everywhere. Nameserver changes at the registry usually take longest. If this tool shows the old value, wait and look up the domain again later.
How do I know if my domain is hosted with Squirrel Media?
Look up your domain above. The three cards at the top of the results show whether your DNS, website and email point to Squirrel Media’s nameservers and servers.
Can I use Squirrel Media for DNS only?
Yes. Our DNS cPanel option is for clients who only need DNS, for example when their email is on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. Contact us to set it up.
Is my website offline, or is it DNS?
If your domain has no A record here, visitors can’t reach the website. If the records look right, run our Online Checker to see whether the web server is answering.
